Cross-border fighting between Thailand and Cambodia has escalated, resulting in at least 12 deaths and dozens of injuries. The skirmish, which took place along the 800-kilometre shared border, has reignited long-standing territorial disputes between the two Southeast Asian nations.

Thailand and Cambodia have exchanged deadly fire along their shared border, with both governments accusing the other of initiating the attacks. Cambodian rocket fire struck Thai territory, killing several people and hitting civilian sites, including a petrol station and a hospital. The violence has caused panic among local residents, many of whom have fled their homes, fearing a significant escalation of the long-standing border dispute. 

The situation is further complicated by a political crisis in Thailand, following the suspension of Prime Minister Phetthongthan Sinhawat over her handling of the dispute. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have reached a low point, with ambassadors expelled and troop deployments to the border. Despite tightened security and threats of further military action, regional powers are urging restraint and seeking opportunities for de-escalation.

A barrage of Cambodian rocket fire is launched into neighboring Thailand. Phnom Penh says its troops were acting in self-defense to what it calls an unprovoked assault. Bangkok says Cambodia instigated the attacks and its armed forces retaliated. There was panic in Thai villages as people fled to bunkers. With many people concerned, a decades-long border dispute could escalate significantly. My hometown is near the border, so we're aware of the situation between Thailand and Cambodia. We think it should end. We don't want it to drag on because a lot has already been lost along the border and people have been affected. Thai authorities say Cambodian shelling killed several people at this petrol station in Sisaket. In neighboring Surin province, the Phnom Dong Rack Hospital also came under fire. Cross-border skirmishes are not new. In 2008, Thai and Cambodian forces exchanged fire near disputed temple. And in 2011, more fighting broke out around a UNESCO World Heritage site, killing dozens of people and displacing thousands. I'm a little scared. I don't want war. I want it to end quickly. If Cambodia first started it and we retaliated, then it's OK. But I just want it to end as soon as possible. Adding to tensions is a political crisis in Thailand, prompted by the suspension of Prime Minister Phetthongthan Sinhawat by the Constitutional Court over her handling of the border dispute. Relations between the Southeast Asian neighbors are at their lowest point in decades. Each has expelled the other's ambassador, and Thai troop convoys have been deployed to border regions where thousands of people are being evacuated from their homes. The Royal Thai government is prepared to intensify our self-defense measures if Cambodia persists in its armed aggression and violations upon Thailand's sovereignty in accordance with international law and principles.
