A Tampa police officer made it through surgery and is stable at the hospital after being shot near Busch Gardens at the police department’s North Tampa district office on Wednesday morning, officials confirmed to FOX 13.

A Tampa police officer was shot outside a police substation by a 21-year-old man who had initially approached the station to make a complaint. Body camera footage shows the officer, Jordan Laupert, engaging in a brief, cordial conversation with the suspect before being shot in the leg as he turned to walk away. The suspect fled the scene and was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Busch Gardens. Officer Laupert was taken to hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition and expected to recover. Police are still working to fully identify the suspect, who reportedly had minimal prior history with law enforcement.

It happened on North 30th Street near Busch Gardens and our FOX 13's Kylie Jones is live outside Tampa General Hospital where that officer was taken and is now being treated. So Kylie, what do we know about the officer's condition and what all happened this morning? Yeah, Ali, well police said he was taken to the hospital, stable, he's in good spirits and has his family recovering, or he is recovering with his family by his side, but we are now getting a look at that officer's body camera footage which shows the interaction between him and the suspect and then that moment he appears to get shot. Officers out here are protecting the community. A Tampa police officer was trying to do just that when he's hit from behind with gunfire. Around 8.15 Wednesday morning, police say a 21-year-old man showed up at the Tampa Police Department's District 2 office on North 30th Street. Originally he was coming in wanting to complain about something, but the details of that are yet to be determined. Chief Lee Burkos says the man got the attention of Officer Jordan Laupert, a 10-year veteran of the department and school resource officer. Here's a look through the lens of Officer Laupert's body camera. The footage shows Laupert talking to the man through the fence. They had what appeared to be a cordial conversation in the rear of the building between the fence and the back. That's where our headquarters is, 411 North Franklin Street, alright? Alright, thank you. Yeah. You hear the man say thank you, then Laupert turns around to walk back towards the building. Before he makes it to the door, that's when he appears to get shot in the leg. Within seconds, other officers rush in. Get me to a hospital. Police say the suspect took off across the street towards Busch Gardens. This is security camera footage from an office at the corner of North 30th and East Annie Street. At the top of the screen, you can see a man run across the street from the District 2 office towards the Annie Street Ambassador entrance to Busch Gardens. He eventually disappears from the screen around the entrance. Officers found the man who appeared to have shot himself in the head. Clearly, we know that there's some type of mental health crisis going on because he shot himself. Officer Laupert was rushed to Tampa General Hospital. Chief Burkos says, thankfully, he is expected to recover. He went through some preliminary medical treatment. I spoke to him at the hospital. He's in good spirits. Now, Officer Laupert is usually an SRO at Hillsboro High, but he was assigned to temporary patrol duty while school's out for the summer.
