The United Nations says more than a million Syrian refugees have returned home. But for them and millions of other people displaced within the country’s borders being at home doesn’t mean the end of all their troubles.

After years of displacement due to Syria's civil war, some families are returning from refugee camps in Lebanon to their homeland. The United Nations, in cooperation with Lebanese authorities and the International Organization for Migration, has begun facilitating these returns, providing transportation and connecting returnees with support services.

Despite this assistance, returnees face significant challenges, including destroyed infrastructure and limited access to basic services. Many must rebuild their lives from scratch, as much of the country remains in ruins and humanitarian aid is stretched thin. The situation remains uncertain for those returning, as well as for many who continue to rely on displacement camps.

Syrian families return home to an uncertain future

From civil war in Syria to refugee camps in Lebanon, it's been a journey of loss, pain and harsh living conditions. But after 14 years in exile, Nadwa and her family are returning home. It's not the end of pain, it's just a new beginning. We've ended a chapter and are starting a new one. I was 18 when I left. In Lebanon we weren't treated badly, but we were still foreigners. Here it is home. The UN says more than one million Syrian refugees were living in Lebanon during the war. Some returned on their own after the fall of the Assad regime. Now the UN has stepped in to help others. On Tuesday, three buses carrying 71 people crossed the border. The UN says it could be the beginning of a much larger operation. With this return home, the refugees say they hope it is going to be the end of a painful chapter of suffering and destitution abroad. The question is what type of situation is awaiting them and whether there is any preparation on the ground to help them rebuild their lives. This is the first facilitated return. It is an initiative between UNHCR, Lebanon and IOM Lebanon to help provide transportation for Syrian refugees who wish to come back to Syria. When they arrive, we connect them with our partners. We have community centres across the country. We also have other humanitarian partners with other UN agencies who will be able to provide some support. That support will be vital to rebuilding destroyed homes and public facilities. Syrians living in displacement camps outside the city of Idlib are also packing to return home. Things are bad here. The excessive summer heat, winter illnesses, scarcity of water, but we thank God we're finally going home, even if it means starting from scratch. We must go even though there's nothing to sustain us there. There's nowhere to stay. It took us 14 years to build a semblance of a home here. We may need another 14 years there to build a new one. The government says while returnees need assistance, many people are still relying on displacement camps. After the liberation, these people's suffering has increased because relief agencies that used to help them have moved to the newly liberated areas, leading to an interruption in water supplies and other basic services in the camps. The civil war has left much of the country in ruins. With little reconstruction to date, those who choose to return home are having to devise their own solutions.
