Authorities have taken 31-year-old Dennis Mitchell III into custody as a suspect in the death of Kansas City, Kansas police officer Hunter Simmons. Mitchell has a history of legal issues, including previous convictions for felony resisting arrest and drug possession, as well as outstanding warrants in Wyandotte County for missing court hearings.

Court records indicate Mitchell was previously sentenced for resisting arrest in 2022 and for opioid possession in 2013. He is currently facing pending charges, including first-degree murder, related to the officer's death. Officials have stated that more information will be released once charges are formally filed.

And the suspect, Dennis Mitchell, has an extensive history with law enforcement, including some of related charges with possession of drugs and including also some warrants for his arrest right here in Wyandotte County. And we want to break those down for you guys this morning. So according to the court records in Jackson County, Mitchell was found guilty in 2022 a felony resisting arrest, meaning he attempted to evade a law enforcement stop. He was sentenced to six days in the Jackson County Detention Center after getting credit for time served. The Wyandotte County courts had a warrant out for his arrest before he was taken into custody. Mitchell failed to appear for his last three court hearings. This was one of two warrants issued for his arrest in Wyandotte County. He faced charges for opioid possession, marijuana possession and intent to use drug paraphernalia, a level five felony in two misdemeanors. In 2013, Mitchell was convicted of felony opioid possession in Johnson County. He was sentenced to 15 months in jail and 12 months of probation. Now, Mitchell is now accused of killing Officer Hunter Simmons sick with multiple charges pending, including first degree murders. Once those charges get filed, we'll make sure to let you guys know.
