Police say the suspected shooter in the Houston ding-dong ditch shooting was hiding in his backyard and then chased two young boys down the street, shooting at them after they knocked on his door and ran away.

A 42-year-old Houston man, Gonzalo Leon Junior, has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of 11-year-old Julian Guzman. According to police, Guzman and his cousin were playing a game known as 'ding-dong ditch,' in which they knocked on Leon's door and ran away. Investigators say Leon hid in his backyard, chased the boys down the street, and shot Guzman in the back as they fled. 

Authorities report that the boys knocked on Leon's door three times over a 15-minute period. Police found multiple firearms, tactical gear, and smoke grenades at Leon's home. A video recovered from Guzman's phone reportedly shows the boys knocking and running before a gunshot is heard. A memorial for Guzman has been set up at the scene, and his family is grieving his loss.

Suspect in ding-dong ditch shooting charged with murder

This is clearly not a self defense case. Lead investigator Sergeant Michael Cass says the suspected shooter was hiding in his backyard and then chased two young boys down the street shooting at them after they knocked on his door and ran away during a game of ding dong ditch. They're really petite small kids. There's no way any homeowner could think or believe that these were grown men trying to harm anybody. Police say 42 year old Gonzalo Leon Junior allegedly shot 11 year old Julian Guzman in the back. The boy later died at the hospital. The Army veteran made his first court appearance Tuesday, charged with murder. Cass says the boys who were cousins had not three times at the suspect store in the span of about 15 minutes. But by the third knock, the homeowner, the person that we have in custody and arrested for murder, was waiting in the backyard, watching in the shadows. They take off running and that's when the little boy shot in the by the suspect, according to Cass, police found smoke grenades, tactical gear and around 20 firearms at Leon's home. Police say they've also uncovered a video which has not been released on Julian Guzman's phone that shows him and his cousin knocking at Leon's door and running away. They don't know they're being chased. Why the suspect? And then you hear a gunshot and then you hear the young boy gas and the phone goes off. What's that like watching it back? It's kind of scary. It's. Surreal because. You're in the moment with this kid. I don't believe he even knew. What happened was going to be his last breath. I don't think he was in it like that. Now there is a growing memorial for Julian Guzman at the scene of the shooting. That's where we met his father yesterday and spoke to him off camera. He of course is still very distressed and grieving the loss of his son, Nate.
