A surfer, identified as Lee Berryman, was attacked by a shark while surfing at De Estre's Bay on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The shark, believed to be a bronze whaler, bit Berryman twice, causing deep lacerations to his leg before retreating. Berryman managed to paddle to shore and was taken to Kingscoat Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery requiring around 50 stitches. 

Shark experts suggest the attack was likely a case of mistaken identity, as the area is frequented by seals. Despite previous incidents, local authorities have no plans to ban surfing at the popular spot. Berryman is expected to make a full recovery, and friends believe he will return to surfing.

Water erupts as fins thrash through the surf as a shark makes a violent split-second strike. The shark, believed to be a bronze whaler, bites twice, latching onto the surfers leg before slipping back into the swell at De Estre's Bay off Kangaroo Island. Looked around and he just saw this big head hanging on his leg and biting his board at the same time. So it was really scary for him. Suffering deep leg lacerations, victim Lee Berryman paddles to shore. He's then driven to Kingscoat Hospital by a fellow surfer undergoing emergency surgery. I think it was 50 odd stitches, so a reasonable amount of work to patch him up. The injury looked pretty gnarly. It was really deep wounds. The local tour guide in his 50s is expected to make a full recovery. He's no stranger to the popular surf break known as the sewer, a spot frequented by seals. Shark experts believe the attack was simply a case of mistaken identity. The shark has gone chasing after the seal and in this moment the seal has used the surfer as potentially a decoy and that's where the surfer unfortunately became entangled in the situation. It's not the first time a person has been attacked at the break. In 2020, a 29-year-old was also bitten by a shark suffering back and thigh injuries. Despite the recent threats, the local council has no plans to ban surfing in the area. If people want to go surfing somewhere and there's a sign that says, you know, danger sharks, they'll probably poo-poo it and go surfing anyway. That's the Australian idiom. Friends expect Lee to be released from hospital by the end of the week and say the brush with death won't keep him out of the water. Maybe not at the sewer straight away, but yeah, yeah, he surfs more than anyone I know. Jessica Heatley, 10 News.
