Sudan's finance minister, Jibril Ibrahim, reported a sharp decrease in the nation's oil production after South Sudan became independent. Production dropped from approximately 500,000 barrels per day to less than 30,000, and the country's oil reserves also fell significantly. 

Speaking at the Russian Energy Week forum, Ibrahim expressed optimism that Sudan could increase its oil output with support from partners possessing advanced technology. He noted that crude oil exports have declined by 84% between 2000 and 2023, a trend attributed largely to the secession of South Sudan, according to the International Energy Agency.

Ibrahim said Sudan's oil production could go back up with support from the right partners. Before the cessation of South Sudan, the total reserves we had was something like five billion barrels, and we are left with only 1.5. We used to produce close to 500,000 barrels a day, and now we are producing less than 30,000 barrels a day. But we believe we can go back easily to post-cessation production of 180,000 barrels a day. That needs partners who have the technology. Sudan's crude oil exports fell by 84% between 2000 and 2023, a trend also influenced by South Sudan's secession, according to the International Energy Agency.
