Some individuals learned of the deaths of relatives, including executions in hospitals, only after seeing footage online. 

The United Nations has received reports of mass killings and summary executions since the RSF's takeover, and the International Criminal Court has announced an investigation into the incidents. The RSF has faced accusations of committing crimes in Darfur since the outbreak of war in 2023 and during the earlier Darfur conflict, but no one has yet been held accountable.

When she first heard the news that the paramilitary rapid support forces have taken over the city of al-Fashir in North Darfur after months of siege, Hikma Saldiq's biggest fear was for her husband. She fled the city weeks before and came to Al-Dabba in northern state to escape RSF artillery fire. She says he was in a hospital when the RSF took control of al-Fashir. Then she saw the video of people being executed in a hospital and saw her husband's dead body among them. Hikma identified her husband to Al-Jazeera as the body wearing the brown shirt. I was looking at the videos and I saw him. I went into a state of shock. I went crazy. For three days I couldn't recognize anyone in front of me. I didn't know what to tell the children. Those that saw the video, I tell them this was their father. He was a civilian, a good man. For months, the RSF had been threatening the city of al-Fashir and built a barrier around the city. That made it hard for those who tried to escape when the group took over. Mobile footage showed dead bodies around the barrier during the first days of the takeover. Other mobile footage showed RSF fighters firing at unarmed civilians. Tayseer came to Al-Dabba in northern Sudan, also escaping artillery fire and drone strikes by the RSF. She learned about her husband's death when she saw the video of his execution by the RSF. His death was on social media and I was the last to find out. I was waiting for his call because I hadn't activated cellular data. His big brother was the one who called me and told me that their cousins saw the video on social media. My children were shocked. They didn't eat for days. I won't forgive the RSF for killing my husband. The UN says it's received reports of mass killings and summary executions since the RSF took al-Fashir. For some people, the social media videos filmed by the RSF fighters themselves are the only way of knowing if the loved ones they've left behind are alive or have been killed. But not all here need videos to confirm the deaths of their family members. Some saw the killings carried out in front of them as they tried to escape the city. Najwa and her family fled al-Fashir hours after the RSF took over the army headquarters in the city. She says her uncle was killed in front of her as they were fleeing. Then the RSF stopped them and took her husband. We were leaving al-Fashir and it was tragic. There were dead bodies on the streets, including children, as they escorted us. They caught my husband and tortured him. They beat his face and his body. The children were crying. We begged them to let us go. They took him covered in blood, unconscious. I don't know if he's alive or dead. The International Criminal Court says it will investigate on the killings in al-Fashir. But the rapid support forces have been accused of committing crimes in Darfur since the war began in 2023. And before that, during the Darfur War in 2003, which spanned two decades.
