Sudanese in the greater capital are struggling with an increase in dengue fever among other diseases, residents and health officials said, amid the ongoing rainy season.

Sudan is currently experiencing a notable increase in dengue fever cases, with the health ministry reporting 723 new cases and two deaths in the past week alone. Since the beginning of the year, over 6,000 cases and nine deaths have been recorded. Residents attribute the spread of the disease to inadequate public sanitation and the accumulation of rainwater, which provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes that carry the infection.

Local accounts highlight infrequent rubbish collection and the buildup of waste and weeds in drains, further exacerbating mosquito proliferation. Dengue fever is endemic in Sudan and can become more severe or fatal with repeat infections, making its control a persistent public health concern.
