The Dolphin Research Center’s Manatee Rescue Team in the Florida Keys has already saved more manatees than in all of last year, as threats like boat strikes, fishing line entanglements and worsening weather drive an increase in rescues.

Rescue teams in the Florida Keys have reported saving more manatees in the past eight months than during the entire previous year, marking a new record. The increase in rescues is attributed to a combination of environmental and human-related threats, including warm waters that promote harmful algae growth, storms that introduce debris and fishing lines into manatee habitats, and increased boat traffic.

The Dolphin Research Center's rescue team is responding to every call, treating and often releasing affected manatees on site. The team continues to address the challenges posed by both climate change and human activity, as they work to protect the vulnerable manatee population.

An animal that is entangled, an animal that has been hit by a watercraft, an orphan, oftentimes we are able to treat and then release the animal on site. The rescue team at Florida's Dolphin Research Center is taking every call, battling both climate and human-caused impacts.
