Authorities in New South Wales are considering a trial to remove shark nets at one beach per local government area, with Bondi Beach, Bronte, Manly, and Terrigal among the candidates. The move comes amid concerns about the impact of shark nets on marine wildlife, as most animals caught in the nets are non-target species such as dolphins, whales, and turtles.

Local councils, including Waverley, have expressed support for the trial but have requested significant increases in alternative shark detection measures such as drones and smart drum lines. The decision on which beaches will participate is pending, as councils weigh public safety and environmental concerns ahead of a busy summer season.

I don't particularly want to swim when there's not any to be honest. I guess I'd prefer them to be there. I just don't like the thought of a shark swimming up behind me now. So like for me, being at a beach 25 years, no shark nets, no incidents. The move follows concerns for marine wildlife caught in the crossfire. 90% of the catch in nets is non-target species, this is bycatch. So things like dolphins, whales, turtles. The nets have been in force since the 1930s, today surf life savers have more tools in their arsenal. We have raving jet ski patrols continuously, Westpac life saver rescue helicopter, also with our drones. And more than 300 smart drum lines statewide to detect the predators. They all form part of a jigsaw puzzle, they're all different pieces and I think in unison they work together. What we've got to do is make sure that we get the balance right. There should be no removal of any protective device that threatens public safety. While Waverly Council has backed removing the nets, it says it will only do so if the state government provides a significant increase in drones and smart drum lines like the one off the coast of Bondi that's detected a shark 11 times in the past month.
