According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the planes maintained the required separation, flying parallel about eight miles apart, though this was closer than controllers preferred. Spirit Airlines stated that their pilots followed all instructions and landed safely, reaffirming their commitment to safety.

Well, let's roll back the clock and talk about a mid-air incident between Air Force One and a Spirit Airlines flight as the president traveled to London. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Chris Van Cleve reports that Spirit Airlines flight had to be told repeatedly to get out of the way of Air Force One. With increasing urgency, air traffic controllers repeatedly ordered Spirit Airlines pilots to pay attention and change course after Spirit Flight 1300 was flying towards Air Force One over Long Island Tuesday. At one point, controllers even telling the pilots, get off the iPad. Here's how it played out over ATC audio. Spirit 1300, turn 20 degrees right now. Spirit wings 1300, turn 20 degrees right immediately. Spirit 1300, traffic's off your left wing by 8 miles, 747. I'm sure you can see who it is, but keep an eye out for him. He's white and blue. That plane, of course, was Air Force One, which was carrying President Trump to London. At one point, the planes were flying parallel about 8 miles apart. The FAA tells us they do not consider that a break in the required separation, but it was clearly closer than air traffic controllers wanted those two planes to be.
