Southern California is under flood watches as a major atmospheric river event is set to bring widespread heavy rain and strong winds. The Los Angeles area is expected to experience prolonged periods of intense rainfall beginning Christmas Eve and continuing into the following day, raising concerns about flooding.

Lower mountain elevations could receive 8 to 12 inches of rain, while higher elevations above 6,000 feet are forecast to see significant snowfall. Northern California cities such as San Francisco and Sacramento are also expected to receive several inches of rain, with the heaviest impacts anticipated for the LA region.

Meanwhile, let's take you to Ojai, California with flood watches in effect. It's breezy, it's going to stay windy out there, and the rain is going to be the biggest story here. A quick look at radar shows that we are dealing with some showers up to the north of Eureka and rain pooling through Las Vegas right now. And again, it's kind of fragmented, but the overall footprint of this atmospheric river event is going to become much more organized, much more widespread, and it's going to really hammer the LA area tomorrow afternoon and evening. To the north though first, some of the slopes in the lower elevations, but of the mountains, so between maybe 1,500 feet and about 6,000 feet in elevation, we're looking at 8 to 12 inches of rain. If you get above 6,000 feet, you're getting into big time snow, and flooding won't be the issue there, it'll be the snow. But San Francisco, Sacramento, 2 to 4 inches of rain. Redding, California, 4 to 8 inches of rain. That'll be a big event. And farther south, LA, you really get into it on Christmas Eve. Let's watch this fill in here. We have the starting block here with two chunks of rain, two different disturbances, but the atmospheric river picks up, and LA is going to see hour upon hour upon hour into Wednesday afternoon of heavy rain. So that will be a big danger. And we're looking at some widespread rain that builds back into San Francisco even, with this separate zone of rain that kind of unfurls here. So the atmospheric river is coming in a few different phases, but the biggest hit is going to come tomorrow evening, through tomorrow night, and into Christmas Day. The south-facing slopes of the transverse ranges here, seeing 8 to 12 inches of snow, and big time, or 8 to 12 inches of rain, I should say, 8 to 12 inches of rain. And big time snow, 8 to 12 feet of snow above 8,500 feet. Incredible snowfall if you're way, way up in the highest elevations of the Sierra.
