People across Southeast Asia are ordering food in solidarity with Indonesian motorcycle taxi and delivery drivers protesting income inequality.

Indonesian delivery drivers have received an outpouring of support from people across Southeast Asia, who are placing food orders for them via delivery apps. This regional solidarity follows ongoing protests in Indonesia over income inequality and working conditions for rideshare drivers, which intensified after a driver was killed by a police vehicle during demonstrations.

Grab, a major delivery app, has reported a surge in overseas orders for Indonesian drivers, though it has not disclosed specific figures. Indonesian drivers have expressed gratitude for the support, while continuing to voice concerns over low pay and lack of government action. The Indonesian president has stated that authorities will take a firm stance against the unrest.

Southeast Asians flood delivery apps to support Indonesian drivers

Indonesian delivery rider Risky Azhar was surprised to get a food order from Malaysia. The order came with a note saying the food was for him. It was placed through the Grab delivery app from over 600 miles away in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur. Twenty-three-year-old Ayman Haris Muhammad Adib says he did it to show there is a regional solidarity with Indonesia's delivery drivers amid ongoing protests. I first saw this particular initiative online, where there were many Malaysians and also there were many calls from other people in Southeast Asia, like Thailand, Singapore, telling us all to contribute to what's happening in Indonesia, contribute to the people and what they're doing by, you know, sending support through food. And so, you know, that really gave me this opportunity or it really showed me that there is a way for me to, you know, give to them and to help out. So that really made me feel like I should do this because I can do this. Malaysia isn't alone. Grab reported a surge in overseas food orders for Indonesian drivers but didn't specify volumes or countries. The protests have flared in parts of Indonesia over income inequality and generous perks for lawmakers. They escalated in late August when motorcycle taxi driver Afan Kurniawan was run over and killed by a police vehicle in Jakarta. That put the precarious lives and low incomes of rideshare drivers at the heart of the demonstrations. The protests have occasionally turned violent after Afan's death, leaving several people dead. Motorcycle taxis are prevalent across Indonesia, including the capital Jakarta, known for some of the world's worst traffic congestion. In recent years, drivers have routinely protested low pay, lack of employment security and unfair practices by ridesharing companies. Delivery rider Risky Azhar shares those frustrations. The promise made by the deputy minister of labor to solve the pay cut caused by app discounts for motorcycle drivers has not even been fulfilled by the government. So there hasn't been any meaningful attention paid to us by the government. Another delivery rider, Pratiri Ariyanti, said the show of support from around the region was hugely appreciated. We would like to express our gratitude to our supporters who sent food from overseas from Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and others for all your support to us, fellow motorcycle drivers in Indonesia who were supported following last week's incident involving our brother and colleague, Afan Kuniawan, who was taken in the tragedy. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has said the police and military will take a firm stance against the unrest, which he says bears signs of terrorism and treason.
