The storm is producing winds up to 230 kilometres per hour and torrential rain, with authorities warning of storm surges exceeding three metres that threaten to flood coastal villages.

Remote northern islands are particularly vulnerable, with thousands of residents in fragile homes at risk from flooding and wind damage. The typhoon is moving westward, with Taiwan and southern China also preparing for heavy rains, flooding, and potential landslides as the storm continues its path.

Meteorologists say it's the strongest storm of the year so far, with winds powerful enough to flip vehicles. Ragasa is a super typhoon, the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane. It's packing gusts of 230 kilometres an hour and driving torrential rain. The storm has triggered mass evacuations. Authorities warn of storm surges more than three metres high. That's when powerful winds push sea water inland, flooding villages like a fast-moving tide. Remote northern islands are most at risk, with thousands living in fragile homes, highly exposed to storms and flooding. Schools and government offices have shut down, even in the capital Manila. This satellite video shows the storm barrelling west. In Taiwan, residents are also preparing for heavy rains, stacking sandbags to block flood water and weighing down belongings so they aren't swept away. The typhoon is expected to bring flooding, landslides and heavy damage, before it barrels west, toward southern China.
