This was the moment former president Yoon Suk-yool declared martial law on national television, plunging South Korea into political crisis. Military helicopters hovered over the country's parliament after the announcement, as supporters of the opposition Democratic Party protested outside, and clashes broke out as soldiers tried to enter the building. Within hours of Yoon's declaration, lawmakers had voted to lift it. A year later, Yoon's successor, President Lee Jae-myung, said that constitutional order was defended thanks to the people. I say this to the citizens of the world, to the many global citizens and democratic leaders who are tirelessly fighting for democracy, look at the Republic of Korea. The martial law may have been short-lived, but the fallout has lasted. President Lee warned that reforming the country would take time. The perpetrators attempted to destroy the entire constitutional order of South Korea and sought to rule the country with military violence above law and order, and the possibility of that becoming reality was extremely high. Such things can happen again at any time. Thousands gathered near the National Assembly Wednesday, calling for rooting out the perpetrators of insurrection. But the country remains politically polarised as it faces a slowing economy and an ageing population. Yoon has remained defiant throughout his trial for insurrection, and a rival march by his supporters drew several hundreds on Wednesday. Former cabinet members and military officers are also under investigation, and Yoon's wife is on trial on charges including bribery, stock market rigging and accepting luxury gifts.
