South Africa has reopened the inquest into the death of Steve Biko, a prominent anti-apartheid activist who died in police custody in 1977 after being tortured. The original police account claimed Biko died from injuries sustained during a scuffle, but this explanation was widely disbelieved and the officers involved were denied amnesty during the Truth and Reconciliation process.

Of the five security officers implicated in Biko's death, only two are still alive. The renewed investigation is seen as an important step toward closure and restorative justice for Biko's family and the nation. Advocates emphasize the need for accountability to prevent similar injustices in the future.

This was the kind of state-sanctioned violence Steve Biko fought against. White police officers opening fire on unarmed black schoolchildren. The anti-apartheid leader became a global icon for his non-violent resistance against racism. And those people will have the same status before the law and they will have the same political rights before the law. It was a belief that ultimately cost him his life. Biko was killed after being tortured in police custody in 1977. As a nation mourned, apartheid police cynically maintained he accidentally hit his head during a scuffle while being interrogated. Now, nearly 50 years later, the inquest into Biko's death has been reopened. In Kosanati, Biko was six years old when his father was killed. It is an important step towards closure and healing. Only two of the five security officers implicated in the murder are still alive, both in their 80s. They could have helped the family heal nearly 30 years ago, when under former President Nelson Mandela, South Africa had a process of truth-telling, led by Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Can you hear our people saying, despite the agony that you have caused us, we want to be friends with you. The deal was simple, truth in exchange for freedom from prosecution for perpetrators of apartheid crimes. All five policemen applied for amnesty for Biko's killing. People were punching at each other. It was not possible to see who hit whom or whether all of the punches hit the mark. But they stuck to their story of a scuffle and were denied absolution. Now they could be charged with murder. There are some South Africans, mostly white South Africans, who will say, let the past be past, it's over. I don't think that is a privilege that we can afford. We cannot call for accountability in this country unless we bed down this issue of accountability. For their entire lives, they have escaped this responsibility of being accountable for their actions.
