The forward spread of a fire that burned multiple homes and injured one person in Lakeside Monday afternoon has been stopped.

A fire in Lakeside, California, has destroyed at least six homes and left two residents injured, with one suffering burns and another from smoke inhalation. The fire began near Los Coches Road and quickly spread, prompting a rapid response from fire crews on the ground and in the air.

The blaze, which grew to about five acres, was contained by approximately 75% after 90 minutes. The cause of the fire is still unknown and under investigation. Preliminary damage reports may change as assessments continue.

At least six homes destroyed, two people injured in a fire in Lakeside this afternoon. It sparked just before 3 p.m. off Los Coches Road and quickly exploded, burning multiple homes to the ground. ABC 10 News brought you breaking news coverage earlier today as multiple crews rushed to the scene. Fire crews worked rapidly to put out the flames, attacking the fire from the ground and the air. They now have a strong hold on it with 75% containment and we have team coverage. Let's start with ABC 10 News anchor Max Goldwasser in Lakeside. Max? A scary scene to start the week in Lakeside. A vegetation fire quickly evolving into something much more, taking several homes with it in the process. Where there's a fire, there's a fight and on Monday the Monterey Mobile Lodge in Lakeside became the battleground. And it can turn just like that. It's not a matter of if it's going to happen, it's a matter of when it's going to happen in this county. A small vegetation fire sparked near Highway 8 Business and Los Coches Road around 3 p.m. wasn't long before it grew. All it takes is one little spark. The spark comes from the vegetation into the homes and then it's a bigger problem because now we're not only fighting a vegetation fire, but we're fighting multiple structure fires. Crews in the air and on the ground moving quickly to put out the flames. Forward progress was stopped after 90 minutes. It only grew to about five acres, but it was enough for the so-called Coches Fire to claim six homes in this community and damage another and leave two residents with reported injuries. One from burns and another from smoke inhalation. My heart feels for them. I understand it. The fires in the past, I did live in the Romano community and I did lose part of my house and the Cedar Fire and the Witch Fire, both fires went right over my house. So I do understand what they're going through and I do feel for them. Jeremy Davis said he also heard several explosions, SkyTen capturing one of them on the property just east of the Mobile Home Park. Cornette telling me it was probably from a propane tank or spray paint canister catching fire. And there also a total loss. The cause of the fire unknown and under investigation. I'm told the damage we've reported on so far, those are just preliminary numbers. All of that could change and potentially increase.
