Severe storms are impacting the Kansas-Colorado border region, with meteorologists reporting significant hail and hazardous conditions for motorists, particularly along Interstate 70. The storms have produced hail up to golf ball size, with warnings in effect for both eastern Colorado and western Kansas. While tornado sirens have sounded, there is currently no confirmed tornado threat, though a brief tornado risk may develop later as a second round of storms is expected overnight. Authorities advise travelers to remain alert and avoid stopping under overpasses during hail events.

Severe storms fire up in Kansas

big trouble brewing right now. Yeah, I keep other meteorologist Tony law back joins us from Burlington, Colorado. This is where he's tracking tonight's severe storm threat. Tony, tell us about about what's happening where you are. We are pretty much neck deep in severe storms behind me. This is looking off to the south about 10 miles. This severe thunderstorm right over the city of Burlington in Interstate 70 warned for golf ball size hail. So this is gonna be a major issue for folks traveling on I 70. And of course, in the town of Burlington over the last few minutes, I have heard what I think are tornado sirens off in the distance. No tornado threat with this particular storm at this time. Not sure why they're blaring the sirens. This is a pretty powerful storm with golf ball size hail, though, so certainly nothing to take lightly right now. This one of two storms that are severe, one just off to my north, which was the one I've been kind of sitting off the last 30 minutes. That one warned for quarter size hail. The one down to the south really has blown up over the last 20 minutes or so. That's gonna be a big threat again, as I mentioned to motorist along I 70, both east and westbound from Burlington points east into Kansas as well as over toward the Goodland Kansas area. Those are gonna be the areas right now that I would certainly be weary of you if you are traveling. We do have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect. I'll show you that graphic. This watch pretty much straddles the Colorado Kansas border right now. So we're looking at a watch that goes until nine o'clock p.m. That's mountain daylight time. So again, kind of along the Kansas Colorado border for the next, I'd say four or five hours here across portions of eastern Colorado and far western Kansas. That is going to be a threat for large, damaging hail. We could be looking at up to tennis ball size, maybe a little bit larger and then damaging wind gusts. Tornado threat non zero, but I would say unlikely at least early on. We are expecting a second round of storms overnight in this region with temperatures a little bit cooler and the low level jet picking up. You might see a storm or two that acquires a little bit of rotation, so maybe a brief tornado threat further along into the evening will bring you back live here. You kind of see the rainbow over my shoulder from the storms. The rain shaft that has kind of moved through here. It has dried up pretty quickly. You can't really tell where this was all mud when I rolled in here. The rain has pushed on as this cluster of storms again continues to work its way on off to the east behind the storm again. Pretty nice looking site here, but again, just to the south in Burlington, Colorado. Again, severe thunderstorm warning for golf ball sized hail. We're very early in this event, so this is going to be a problem here over the next several hours. So motorists in the region, eastern Colorado, and that extends all the way south in the Oklahoma Panhandle, eastern Colorado, western Kansas. Certainly be cautious if you are traveling, particularly along I 70 where that hail could be an issue. Folks, if you do get stuck in a hill, pull over the side of the road. Do not park and block overpasses. You don't want to be under those blocking traffic when these storms roll through. Great advice there, Tony. We'll check in with you in about an hour.
