The International Monetary Fund reported that Senegal's debt reached 132 percent of GDP by the end of 2024 and has since paused its $1.8 billion lending program, leaving the country with financing challenges.

At a joint press conference with Mauritania's Prime Minister, Sonko expressed confidence that Senegal's debt remains at sustainable levels and indicated there are alternatives to restructuring. Sonko's administration has also accused the previous government of concealing the true scale of the country's debt, which is owed to a diverse group of creditors, including commercial lenders.

Sonko's government has accused the administration of former President Marcky Sall of hiding the extent and scale of the country's debt.
