We are diving into the looming budget cuts hitting our schools, as students and teachers prepare to head back to the classroom. Our Capitol reporter Forrest Saunders joins us to unpack the ripple effects.

School districts across Florida are preparing for major budget cuts following a significant reduction in federal funding, estimated at around $400 million statewide. These funds previously supported programs for migrant and English education, as well as extracurricular initiatives like the Boys and Girls Club. Districts such as Leon County are facing multimillion-dollar shortfalls, which they may need to cover from their own limited budgets amid rising costs due to inflation.

In response, parent and community groups have filed a federal lawsuit aiming to restore or protect these funds. State lawmakers have acknowledged the cuts but point to other spending priorities, such as new detention facilities, as being mandated by recent elections. The financial strain comes as schools prepare for the upcoming academic year, leaving districts uncertain about how to maintain services without the lost funding.

School district bracing for budget cuts

Welcome back into Full Circle Florida. Joining us right now, Tallahassee correspondent Forrest Saunders and another busy week in Tallahassee and Forrest. As students get ready to go back to class in the coming weeks, the axe is falling on the school budget statewide. It comes from both the state and the federal level, perhaps more from the federal level. But how are parents and students going to feel this in their day to day experience at school? Well, the chunk of money that Florida is going to miss out on is federal dollars, but it's something to the neighborhood of like 400 million, and it's divided up amongst a bunch of different school districts across the state. And these air programs that are basically designed to help teachers with migrants help teachers with English education, training boys and girls club. But the problem is that if you take that funding away and the school still thinks there's a need for it, they're gonna have to fund it out of pocket. And we're talking about big chunks of money for some of these districts right here in Leon County. It's more than $12 million. The school district is going to miss out on it, so they're gonna have to backfill that in other ways, and that's probably money that's gonna come out of their own coffers. And things are already tight for a lot of these school districts, given that inflation has raised the prices of about everything that they have in the classroom. So it's going to be a real pinch. And in a lot of these districts just don't know how they're going to move forward without this cash. And so what we've seen is the PTA and other groups have banded together, and they're filing a federal lawsuit to try and reclaim this money, or at the very least, prevent it from being stripped away by the federal government. And have state lawmakers acknowledged the severity of these cuts, combined from state and federal? Because I'm just wondering, has anyone connected the dots that we're spending $450 million a year on this detention, Alligator Alcatraz, that the governor wants? And wouldn't you know it, the shortfall facing school districts statewide is about $400 million. Yeah, and you know, listen, if you talk to the Republicans that are in control here in the state legislature, what they'll tell you is that they're responding with Alligator Alcatraz to a voter mandate from the 2024 election and that they are creating this facility because something needs to be done about illegal immigration, and that's why it's there. And so this is what the voters wanted. You're also seeing from the federal level a desire to try and roll back and slim down the education department to try and find efficiencies and cut wasteful spending. But as you mentioned, I mean, those bills do come due, and eventually the school districts will fill the pinch. And the question will be, how will voters feel? Will they have buyer's remorse after voting for these measures essentially during the 2024 election? Yeah, well, the timing certainly isn't good as school is about to start in two weeks, and these school districts are trying to figure out how to budget out the entire year.
