San Diego Wave has announced it will retire Alex Morgan's number 13 jersey in a ceremony following an upcoming match at Snapdragon Stadium. Morgan, who played her final game for the club a year ago, is celebrated for her distinguished career, which includes two World Cup titles and over 300 goals at the professional and national team levels, with 23 of those goals scored during her 50 games with the Wave.

The club is marking the occasion with several events, including a youth soccer clinic in partnership with the Alex Morgan Foundation and the unveiling of a mural in her honor. Teammates and fans alike have praised Morgan for her leadership and influence, both as an athlete and as a role model for women in sports.

ABC 10 News sports director Ben Higgins tells us some of the other ways fans are honoring the soccer legend this week. You pushed me to be my best self every day. One year ago Alex Morgan played her final game for the Wave, wrapping up a professional soccer career that included two World Cup titles and more than 300 goals on the pro and national team level. The last 23 of those came in her 50 games with the Wave. We wouldn't be here as San Diego and how big the Wave has gotten in the last three and a half years if it wasn't for Alex. As her teammate, Wave goalkeeper Kaylin Sheridan got an up-close look of what made Alex Morgan such a superstar both on the field and off it. First and foremost as a person she's kind of led the way in what's available for women's sports and also showing me that it's possible to be a mom and a professional athlete and a damn good one. The Wave begin the celebration on Thursday afternoon by teaming up with the Alex Morgan Foundation for a community youth soccer clinic here at the YMCA in Mission Valley. And then on Friday the fun shifts to North Park here at Mike Hess Brewing where artist Paul Jimenez will unveil a new Alex Morgan mural to inspire future generations of soccer stars. I think what I learned from her is just like how to come in and be the best every day and and to exemplify that and not only speak it. I think a lot of people are good at speaking and using their words but she she showed me every day. I just thank you so much.
