A San Diego police officer, Stephanie Cockrell, has filed two legal claims against the San Diego Police Department, alleging harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. Cockrell was previously accused of installing hidden cameras in her ex-husband's home and faced possible termination after an internal investigation into stalking, theft, and untruthfulness. However, after a change in police leadership, her termination was overturned, as were those of five male officers. Cockrell claims that rumors of an affair with the new police chief, which she denies, have led to daily harassment and sexist remarks at work. 

She further alleges that the department failed to hold her ex-husband, also an officer, accountable for his own misconduct. The city paid for an external investigation into the rumors, but the findings have not been released. Cockrell's ex-husband has requested a restraining order, and the police department has declined to comment on the pending litigation.

San Diego officer alleges harassment over false rumours

A San Diego police officer who was facing termination now says she's been discriminated against and plans to sue the department. Team 10 first revealed in August the officer was accused of installing hidden cameras in her ex-husband's home. The officer claims she's been the subject of rumors alleging an inappropriate relationship with the police chief. Investigative reporter Austin Grabisch has been following the case for months and now shows us the backlash the officer says she's facing. It just won't stop and I just need it to stop. Officer Stephanie Cockrell says going to work has become a nightmare. I can't sleep, I'm not eating, I've gained weight, I've lost weight, my hair is falling out. Team 10 revealed in August the officer was accused of installing hidden cameras in her ex-husband's home. A subpoena revealed she bought 11 cameras, GPS trackers, and voice recorders. Court records say Cockrell was facing termination from the force following an internal affairs investigation for stalking, theft, and untruthfulness. But after former police chief David Nislight retired, Cockrell says his successor, Chief Scott Wall, overturned the probe and let her keep working. She says Wall also overturned the termination of five male officers. Then she says rumors started to spread that she had an affair with the chief, something she flat out denies. She has been the subject of daily harassment, ridicule, and humiliation. Cockrell announced Thursday she's filed two legal claims against the San Diego Police Department which are precursors to a lawsuit. In her claim, she says an anonymous letter was sent to the city council alleging she had an affair with Wall. In August, I revealed the city paid a San Francisco law firm $37,000 to launch a confidential investigation into allegations made against the chief. The police department and the city attorney's office have refused to release the findings of that probe or say what it was about. Cockrell says in her claim that in January she was interrogated by Internal Affairs about the alleged affair and claims she's now facing sexist backlash at work. On a daily basis, she is subjected to degrading questions about whether Wall is good in bed and taunts implying she must be bad in bed given her lack of promotion despite the alleged relationship. Last month, as she left a heated civil court hearing, I asked Cockrell to respond to the allegations uncovered by Team 10's months-long investigation. She stayed silent. Did you have an affair with Police Chief Scott Wall? Did you install a tracking device on your ex-husband's truck? On Thursday, I tried asking Cockrell and her attorney several questions. Why would Officer Cockrell buy hidden cameras? Again, we're not going to be answering any questions. Were there any inappropriate messages between Officer Cockrell and Police Chief Scott Wall? Cockrell says she's suing for justice, alleging sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation. She claims the police force failed to hold her ex-husband, another officer, accountable after she says she caught him having an affair with a subordinate. And all I wanted to do was save my family and now I'm being made out to be crazy? Her ex-husband is asking the court for a restraining order.
