Russian forces have conducted a targeted campaign against Ukrainian army recruitment centres, destroying at least six facilities through drone strikes. The attacks come as Ukraine faces a significant shortage of soldiers, with fewer volunteers available and many existing fighters either injured, killed, or exhausted after years of conflict.

Ukrainian military officials state that they are adapting by shifting recruitment operations online and having staff work remotely. Despite the strikes, authorities claim the attacks have not affected recruitment, though challenges persist due to the lack of new volunteers and the political unpopularity of conscription.

Everywhere you walk on the streets of Kiev at the moment you find army recruitment posters. Look, there's one here, here. This one is huge. On this one a soldier's riding a kitten over a field of zombies. And here an army medic is helping an injured alien. But beneath the humour Ukraine has a chronic problem. Three years into this gruelling war and it just doesn't have enough soldiers. Russia knows it. So let's see what Moscow's doing to exploit the situation. On June 30th Russian drones hit a regional recruitment office in Krivyi Rih. On July 3rd it was Poltava. On the 6th it was Kremenchuk and there were more. Clearly it's a targeted campaign. At least six recruitment centres have been destroyed so far. We're going to go and see what the army has to say about it. The main goal is to spread fear and panic. To instill fear in those liable for military service, in ordinary people and in civilians. The colonel tells me that the Ukrainian army is changing things up, moving services online with staff working remotely. Barring exemptions any man of military age can be drafted at any time but it's volunteers that usually make the better fighters. These though are in short supply these days. Those that wanted to sign up did so at the beginning of the war. Many of them are either injured or dead and those that are still fighting well they're exhausted. I just watched this exchange from Parliament recently when an opposition MP asked President Zelensky when those men would be rotated or demobilized. Our heroic soldiers will return home when we defeat the enemy and that enemy is Putin. Our heroes deserve quality rotations when people like you help them in the combat zone not just here. It is a catch-22. Ukraine can't let fighting men home because there just aren't enough to replace them but not knowing when you're going to get demobilized that's a real drag on recruitment and conscription is politically unpopular. Now Ukraine's military insists that Russia's strikes on its recruitment centers aren't having any effect but Ukraine's problems they're there anyway. Rory Challens, Al Jazeera, Kyiv.
