The strike also killed 19 others, including four journalists and rescue workers. Al-Masri, who had worked with Reuters since 2024 and previously freelanced for various outlets, was known for his reporting on Gaza's humanitarian crisis. 

The Israeli military stated that the journalists were not targeted and that the strike was aimed at alleged militants, while Hamas disputed this claim. Reuters and the Associated Press have called for urgent and transparent accountability. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 189 Palestinian journalists have been killed in the conflict so far.

Hossam al-Mazri, a 49-year-old Reuters cameraman, was killed by Israeli fire Monday while running a live feed at Gaza's Nasser Hospital. Mazri's final broadcast captured the view across Khan Younis from an external stairwell at the hospital when the Israeli strike hit. A second Israeli strike minutes later killed 19 others, including rescue workers and four journalists from outlets like the Associated Press and Al Jazeera. Born and raised in Khan Younis, Mazri's passion for journalism began with a desire to show the world the truth of life in Gaza. He joined Reuters in Rafah as a contractor in May 2024, after earning a journalism diploma and freelancing since 1998 with outlets like the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation. His work included live broadcasts from displacement camps, documenting aid at the Rafah border, and most recently managing Reuters' daily feed from Nasser Hospital, a real-time window into Gaza's plight that's been used around the world. And Mazri's vivid reporting, including stories on malnutrition and famine, brought Gaza's unfolding tragedy to global audiences. This is his brother, Ezzeldin al-Mazri. This was Hussam's role in the media, to deliver the truth to the outlets. The camera is recording whether for or against us. The camera recorded whether there were Palestinian gunmen or Israeli occupation forces. Hussam was just documenting with his camera. He was not part of the events, not creating the events, only documenting the events. Mazri's colleagues described him as a beloved figure in Gaza's tight-knit journalist community. Mohamed Salim, a senior Reuters visuals journalist who worked alongside Mazri since 2003, said his optimism and smiles made him a pleasure to work with. Salim said that Mazri had chosen to look after the live feed at Nasser Hospital in part because he believed it was the safest place he could operate from. During their final conversation, Mazri described how difficult life had become in Gaza and the struggle to find food. He was dead within hours. Mazri's personal losses mirrored Gaza's broader devastation. His family's home in Khan Yunis was destroyed after Israel's offensive expanded following the Hamas attacks of October 2023. He leaves behind four children as well as his wife, Samar, who has cancer and for whom he sought treatment abroad. IDF troops carried out... Israel's military told Reuters on Tuesday that the five journalists killed on Monday were not a target of the strike, which it says targeted six alleged militants. It also said Israel's army chief had ordered a further inquiry into how the decision to strike the hospital was made. In a statement issued later on Tuesday, Hamas challenged the Israeli account of the hospital casualties, denying that any of the Palestinians killed were militants. Reuters and the AP said the deaths demanded urgent and transparent accountability in a letter to Israeli officials. On Monday, the Committee to Protect Journalists said that 189 Palestinian journalists have been killed in the war so far and called for accountability, saying the perpetrators must no longer be allowed to act with impunity.
