The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture's first collection was started in 1925, and today, it is among the oldest and largest collections of materials documenting the history and culture of people of African descent in the United States.

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City is commemorating 100 years since its founding. Established in 1925, the center began with the acquisition of Arturo Schomburg's collection and has grown to become one of the largest archives documenting the history and culture of people of African descent in the United States.

To mark its centenary, the center organized events such as the Black Comic Book Festival and the Schomburg Literary Festival, featuring readings, discussions, and workshops. With over 11 million items in its archive, the center continues its mission to preserve, interpret, and make accessible the global Black experience, while aiming to reach a wider audience in the future.

Research center celebrates 100 years of documenting Black culture

It's one of the largest repositories of black history in the country, but nobody knows about it. The Schomburg Centre for Research in Black Culture in New York City has documented black literature, art, recordings and films for a century. An occasion to celebrate. We are celebrating our centennial, which is 100 years of documenting, preserving and making accessible art and artefacts, books, manuscripts, photographs, films, by and about people of African descent. And this has been housed here at the library at the beginning since 1925 and in 26 we acquired Mr Schomburg's collection, which kicked it off. The centre's research archive comprises over 11 million items that showcase the vastness of the African diaspora and keep alive the legacies of black writers, artists, musicians and intellectuals. It is a way to negate all the negative stereotypes and derogatory imagery that is out about black people. This gives you the tools and the voice to counter it because you're seeing all the beauty. To celebrate its centenary, the centre organized two key events. The Black Comic Book Festival and the Schomburg Literary Festival run across a full day and feature readings, panel discussions, workshops, children's story times and cosplay. The Schomburg Centre has been dedicated to the collection, preservation and interpretation of global black experiences for these last 100 years. And we really have our origin at the 135th Street Library, so of course we're going to celebrate literacy and literature, but we're also a research centre and so we amplify scholars of colour, scholars who are thinking about black history and culture. As the centre looks ahead to another 100 years of documenting and preserving historic artefacts, its directors also hope that soon more people might discover the vast cultural treasure hidden in the centre's halls.
