Security footage captured masked settlers setting fires, while local residents reported minimal response from police or military forces stationed nearby. According to the United Nations, such attacks occur frequently but rarely result in prosecution.

The situation is influenced by the political power of settler-backed parties within Israel's ruling coalition. Security Minister Ben Gvir, himself a settler, has openly supported arming settlers and opposes ending the war in Gaza, threatening to destabilize the government if a hostage deal is reached. Analysts suggest that settler groups have become a dominant force in Israeli politics, with significant influence over decisions related to the conflict and prospects for a cease-fire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is indicating that the war in Gaza will end only when all the hostages are released at once. This comes as Israeli strikes in Gaza killed at least 123 Palestinians in the past day. That is according to the Hamas-run health ministry. And while it's been nearly two years since the start of the current conflict in the Gaza Strip, CBS News' Deborah Paddack got a closer look at renewed violence between Jewish settlers and Palestinians in the West Bank. Caught on security camera, masked Israeli settlers brazenly attacking a compound where 15 Palestinian families live in the occupied West Bank. They set fire to cars, grazing land, homes, leaving behind a scorched earth. Awad Fazar's toddlers were rescued from this burning bedroom. He tried to lay charges. The police said there was nothing they could do, he told us, and that the military had done nothing to intervene. The entire time that this attack was taking place at night, there were Israeli soldiers stationed at this military base. You can see it across the road, directly opposite the compound. There are around four settler attacks a day, according to the United Nations, but they are seldom prosecuted. And they have friends in high places, including ultra-right-wing security minister Ben Gaffir, himself a settler, seen here arming them in the West Bank. Together with other right-wing groups, he is key to keeping Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition in power, and has openly opposed ending the war in Gaza, threatening to thwart a hostage deal by collapsing Netanyahu's government. He defines Israel. Haaretz journalist Gideon Levy has reported on the rise of settlers for over 30 years. They became the landlords of the West Bank, and they became the strongest pressure group in Israeli society. So strong, it's feared settler-backed parties have an effective veto power over any permanent cease-fire. Here, you see a rare instance where settlers were arrested for violence against Palestinians. They retaliated in their hundreds by storming an Israeli military base and attacking soldiers. There was condemnation, but no consequences. They are the real government. It's a monster that now everyone is helpless to watch it happening. How did the settler group go to being this powerhouse and a kingmaker politically? The settlers know what they want, and they are ready to pay a price for it. And what they want is to force Palestinians off their land for good, so they can annex both the West Bank and Gaza, even if it means sacrificing a hostage deal. For nearly two years, Netanyahu has been accused by Israeli protesters of choosing war and his political survival over securing a cease-fire. But now there's growing pressure, not just for a deal, but a permanent end to the conflict. Deborah Pada, thank you.
