Millions of Americans with student loans under the SAVE plan will soon see interest begin accruing on their debt again, following the end of a court-ordered pause. During the pause, borrowers were not required to make payments and no interest accumulated, but this will change as the injunction lifts.

Experts advise borrowers to review their options, including making voluntary interest payments or switching to income-driven repayment plans such as the IBR plan. The Department of Education recommends that those working toward loan forgiveness move to an income-driven plan to continue making qualifying payments. Borrowers are encouraged to check their accounts and consult with their loan servicer as the SAVE plan is set to end in 2028.

Just a few days, millions of Americans with student loans could see their debt increase. Nearly 8 million people under the SAVE plan will see interest start accruing once again on their payments starting August 1st. Anissa Bohannon is joining us live in studio this morning with what this means for the many borrowers here in our community. Good morning Anissa. Eventually Justin, good morning, good to see you. The SAVE plan, now it had been on pause because of a court injunction which meant no one under the plan was required to make monthly payments on those loans and no interest had been accruing. But starting on Friday, that will change. Interest will once again start accruing and if you're a borrower under that plan, what can you do to prepare? Experts say, well, you've got several options. Borrowers can stay in forbearance today. They don't have to make payment. They could make payment on the interest that is accruing, the voluntary payment to make sure that the loan doesn't get bigger. Every individual borrower is going to have a different circumstance. I would say probably for the vast majority of people, especially those who are trying to work their way towards loan forgiveness, that moving into the IBR plan is probably the best bet. The Department of Education is encouraging borrowers to apply for other repayment plans like the income-based repayment or IBR plan like you just mentioned there. You can also apply for an income-based or pay-as-you-earn repayment plan. If you're enrolled in the SAVE plan and are working towards public service loan forgiveness, in order to start making qualifying payments, you must switch over to an income-driven repayment plan, and experts say you should do that right away. Now, under President Trump's big, beautiful bill, the SAVE plan will shut down in 2028. Experts say now is the time to re-engage, take a look at your accounts, and talk to your loan servicer.
