Many of the nearly 1,700 detainees, who were held without charge, described their imprisonment as extremely harsh, citing daily suffering and fear.

Human rights organisation B'Tselem has alleged that Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails are denied medical treatment, adequate food, and are subjected to physical abuse. Israeli authorities, however, state that their prison system complies with international law.
