The Australian federal government has expanded its social media ban for users under 16, adding Reddit and Kik to a growing list of age-restricted platforms that already includes Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, X, and Threads. The new regulations, which will take effect in 35 days, aim to address concerns about youth safety and online activity.

Authorities noted that other platforms such as Twitch, Discord, and Roblox are not yet included, though their status is under review. The government emphasized that the list of regulated companies may change as technology evolves, and questions remain regarding the age verification methods platforms will use.

Laying down the law against the social media giants, the federal government today adding Reddit and Kik to the growing list of platforms required to adhere to its world-first social media ban for under-16s. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, X, Threads, Reddit, and Kik as age-restricted platforms. Reddit is an online forum used by more than 110 million people around the world every day, and Kik is an Australian-based online video streaming platform, which has been sued by the French government after a man died during a live stream in August. I think it'll be a very, very fluid situation. I mean, no one was talking about TikTok three years ago. Twitch and Discord, which are also video streaming platforms and online game roadblocks, are not on the list, despite this warning from Australia's top cop just last week. Parents really need to know what apps, what platforms, what gaming platforms, what is your child doing online? We will be considering Twitch. If we all kind of sit down and just applying the criteria, but also asking ourselves, if this particular feature or functionality was taken away, would people still be using it in the same way? And that will be the true test of these laws when they come into effect in 35 days, keeping up with the ever-changing pace of technology and the social media platforms that come with it. The government says, though, the list of companies that will have to comply with these laws will continue to change. There are still too many questions, including the platforms, which age verification technology they're going to use. Matthew Garstunen, 10 News.
