There's water everywhere, but not a drop to drink, at least until the supplies arrived. For this family trapped by floods around their home in Kadola in Colombo, the army was a welcome sight. Al Jazeera joined the team on their rescue and relief work on Monday. Starting at daybreak, they delivered cooked meals, water bottles and basic medicines to stranded families and workers. Then came a more delicate operation, getting this young mother and her sick toddler to dry land. We haven't had any electricity or water for about three days. My child is sick, that's why I decided to take her to the doctor. Help is coming from many directions. This Pakistan Navy team has joined Indian military colleagues who are helping the Sri Lankan relief effort and help bring a stranded group to safety. Closer to home, Sri Lankans are mobilizing to help. Here at the Vijayrama Community Kitchen, thousands of meals are being prepared and sent to those affected by the floods, a scene repeated around the country by people wanting to help. Run by volunteers, this effort is supported by donations, from an old lady who handed more than 200 grams of lentils to someone who dropped off a truckload of rations. I think everyone wanted to contribute and they needed a channel to channel their emotions basically towards it and help. So that's how this team came together and it grew bigger and now we have a fully-fledged operation running. And it's not just people that have been affected. In Muluthu in the east, wild elephants were filmed stranded and disoriented by the floods. Wildlife officers rescued this young calf and hotels had some interesting visitors. The sheer scale of this natural disaster is one of the biggest challenges for Sri Lanka, having to look at rebuilding from the ground up, looking at infrastructure, logistics and all of that and which is why the President is calling for as much assistance with local assistance, diaspora abroad as well as foreign donors to help Sri Lanka in this mammoth task.
