A rare species of jellyfish nicknamed 'pink meanie' is captivating beachgoers along the Texas coast.

A rare jellyfish species, nicknamed the 'pink meanie', has appeared in significant numbers along the Texas coast, particularly from Port Aransas to Corpus Christi. The jellyfish, notable for its cotton candy pink color and large size, can weigh up to 50 pounds and have tentacles reaching 70 feet in length. 

Experts attribute the unusual bloom to a surge in moon jellyfish, which are the pink meanie's main food source. While the jellyfish's tentacles can sting, the species is named for its predatory behavior towards other jellyfish and its distinctive pink hue.

A flash of cotton candy pink is drifting inside the coastal waters. It's a rare jellyfish nicknamed pink meanie. Jared Penkening is visiting from Waco for his yearly fishing trip to the coastal bend. This year he spotted the rare pink meanies and it's not nothing he was expecting. First when I saw them I didn't realize, I thought it was a trash bag, it was big enough. And then I realized it was a jellyfish and it was over the size of a dinner plate. Jay's tunnel with the Heart Research Institute got video of the pink jellyfish. Tunnel says this is an exciting but also a very rare sight to see. This weird phenomenon when conditions are right and their food source is blooming, they will also bloom. Tunnel says pink meanies have been spotted along gulf beaches from Port Aransas to Corpus Christi. A single jellyfish can weigh up to 50 pounds with 70 foot long tentacles. And those tentacles will sting you, but that's not why they're called pink meanies. We're seeing so many of them right now is because we have a bloom of moon jellyfish and that's their main food source. So how they get their name is they're mean because they're eating other jellyfish and they have a real pink looking color to them. They almost look like cotton candy floating around out in the ocean.
