A cold front is set to bring welcome rain to the Northeast after escalating drought conditions.

A cold front is advancing through the northeast, bringing the first significant rainfall to the region in some time. The front is currently moving across Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois, with the highest chances of rain and strongest winds along its leading edge. Temperatures are beginning to drop behind the front, with lows expected to reach the 30s and 40s in some areas, raising the possibility of frost in certain regions.

As the front continues eastward, rain and thunderstorms are forecast to spread from cities like Cleveland and Louisville toward the eastern seaboard, including Scranton, Harrisburg, Washington DC, and Baltimore. Winds will be strongest along the cold front, while most other areas will experience milder breezes and cooler temperatures overnight.

Rain finally on the way for the Northeast

We need some rain in the northeast. That's right we do need some rain in the northeast and starting tonight we will start to get some here as we head into the next 24-36 hours. Here's the latest on radar so you can see that that cold front is just now starting to work its way just across parts of Michigan down through Indiana even parts of Illinois. So along the leading edge of that cold front that is where we're going to see the highest chance of rain and that's where we're going to see some of the strongest winds as well. So I'll leave the cold front there on the map and as we advance you can see the impacts of the temperature. So last time I showed this temperature map Detroit was at 80 degrees right now they're at 78 a subtle drop but drop is about to get a lot more pronounced here as we head throughout the next hour or two. Chicago 69, Milwaukee 68, Green Bay 63. So we are starting to see the impacts there of that cold front. Everywhere else pretty nice we have widespread 70s and 80s in the forecast still 80 degrees currently in Burlington. Whenever you look at the winds that we are tracking right now you can see along the cold front we have winds picking up there in Detroit down through Indianapolis. Some strong northwest winds there in Green Bay clocking in at 14 miles an hour. We've also had some breezier winds here across the coastal areas including in Boston but overall most of the strong winds are going to be along the leading edge of that cold front here as we head into this evening and as we head into tonight. So it's going to be the latest there as far as the overall trends for both the rain chances and the temperatures and winds. Behind that cold front for tonight look at these lows 55 for Detroit 30s and 40s there behind the front. For the rest of the region we'll primarily be in the 50s and 60s. We'll see some 40s here especially in the highlighted regions there in blue but overall that's where we're going to see the biggest changes here temperature wise as we head into tomorrow is going to be along the leading edge of that front especially during the overnight hours which as Jeff just detailed some areas are going to be within range of maybe even seeing some frost here as the sun comes up for your early Thursday. So as we head into Thursday afternoon the front is going to work its way farther to the east and you can see along the leading edge of that front we're going to see shower and thunderstorm chances. So because of that we'll see the rain moving from west to east. So if you're in this highlighted region here where we have painted with green if you're along the eastern border there from Scranton Harrisburg down through Washington DC Baltimore as well you'll see the rainfall be start kicking off later in the day than early in the morning for those areas from Cleveland down through Louisville for example.
