Will the latest round of wintry weather bring snow to your town? AccuWeather's Geoff Cornish breaks down the forecast.

A weather system is expected to bring a mix of rain and snow to the Northeast United States from mid- to late week. Mild air and rain will initially affect the region, but as a cold front arrives, colder air will follow, resulting in snow showers and lake effect snow, especially near the Great Lakes.

Snow accumulations will vary, with less than an inch expected in major cities like New York and Philadelphia, while areas near the Poconos and west central Pennsylvania could see up to an inch. Heavier snow, with totals of three to six inches, is forecast near and east of Watertown, New York, and in the interior regions near the Great Lakes.

Low visibility. This is pretty exciting stuff. Chad's a big time weather enthusiast and AccuWeather meteorologist. He knows his stuff. He spent a lot of time in West Virginia and I have to expect this was a pretty exciting time there for him. As you know, if you're a meteorologist and you're out skiing and then this kind of thing happens, you certainly sit up and take notice. Overall, Wednesday we're going to be dealing with mild air there at flat top and even some rain showers through parts of West Virginia. 44 in Pittsburgh, a rain snow mix, rain into Buffalo, snow showers in Detroit, but to the east until this front really sets in. We're in transition to this, so we've got milder air with rain to the east and we're going to be holding on to this milder air for one more day, one and a half more days. Radar and clouds now certainly showing a few rain showers breaking out in parts of southern, far southern Ontario. We got snow to the north, but a rain snow mix is in progress. Very light northwest Pennsylvania, western New York state. The true front still off to the west, but as we take you forward with future radar and clouds, you can see that it's going to be a system that comes through a weak disturbance that precedes the true front. And then Wednesday, here comes the actual cold front firing on in. We got rain in advance of it, colder air with snow showers behind it, and once the winds really reorient themselves, we're going to begin to see some more lake effect snow and eventually the winds will kind of conform more to these arrows I'm drawing. And here you can see it's a little bit more oriented that way. By Thursday morning, some of this snow will be seeded by Lake Ontario or by Lake Huron, boosted by Lake Erie or the Georgian Bay plus Lake Ontario. That will help to produce more of these lake effect snow bands, and then just a generic snow will fall across the New England states. Most of this will not really survive down to I-95 once we get to Thursday afternoon, but there's a window of time in New York City or Philadelphia. Wednesday night, when rain will mix with and change to a little bit of snow, we're expecting less than an inch, just a small fraction of an inch in some of these areas. Thursday, a rain snow mix in New York City. We're drying out in Philadelphia. To get to a full inch of snow, you probably need to be up into areas around the Poconos or near or west of I-99 in west central Pennsylvania. And then we have three plus inches here in the second shade of blue, and then six plus into areas of the third shade of blue near and east of Watertown, New York. And then Friday, some more snow and snow showers in the far interior near the Great Lakes, and that'll linger through Friday evening with another one to three inches for some and three to six inches for others.
