Vladimir Putin compared recent Russian drone incidents to the old "hysteria" surrounding alleged UFO encounters and joked that he would no longer fly drones over Denmark. We talk to DW's Brussels correspondent Teri Schultz for reaction to this.

Danish officials are investigating a recent wave of drone sightings, but have not confirmed any direct link to Russia or Russian proxies. Authorities highlighted related incidents, such as the presence of a 'Shadow Fleet' tanker and Russian warships in the region, but stopped short of attributing responsibility. The Danish intelligence chief noted a heightened risk of sabotage and military provocations against Denmark and other NATO countries.

Meanwhile, Belgian officials reported that drones which caused the closure of Munich airport originated from Belgium, with further details still emerging. In response to these incursions, the EU and NATO are working to strengthen airspace security, including funding for counter-drone technology and increased aerial surveillance. Ukrainian experts have also been involved in supporting these efforts during recent European summits.

Putin jokes that he won't fly drones over Denmark

Let's bring in more on this. DW correspondent Terry Schultz is joining us now from Brussels. So Terry, I mean, Putin really joking there about not flying drones over Denmark. But we have to mention, Danish intelligence still has not confirmed that this week-long wave of drone sightings is indeed linked to Russia. Tell us a little bit more about what officials have been saying. That's right, Sarah. There was a press conference early this morning by the Danish defense minister and the nation's intelligence chief, and they didn't give any direct evidence that Russia was responsible, Russia or Russian proxies were responsible for these drones directly. But they did talk about incidents that could tie Russia to this. For example, a Shadow Fleet tanker that was docked off the Danish coast during the beginning of the week when some of the drones were sent up, that has now been detained by French authorities who are looking into possible links to the drone wave. And this morning, the intelligence chief talked about other incidents of Russian warships in the Danish Straits, for example, setting themselves on a collision course directly with Danish naval vessels. They also said at some point Danish warships locked their radars on Danish helicopters, so clearly trying to send a threatening signal. Again, examples of what Denmark says is a hybrid war against their country and against all of Europe. And I should say that the intelligence chief said that now they believe the risk of sabotage against Danish armed forces is high. The risk of military provocations against NATO countries, they also set it high, Sarah. It's interesting to see the ambiguity here. But you know, we had the closure of the Munich airport overnight in addition, and now Belgian officials are saying that the drones responsible for that originated in Belgium. Tell us a little bit more about that. That's right. There's not a whole lot of information out about that yet. But the Belgian defense minister did confirm that they believe the drones that closed the Munich airport overnight came from Belgium. They were 15 drones spotted flying over a Belgian military base, Elsenborn, shortly before they went into Denmark. And it seems that Belgium was actually alerted to this by German authorities because this base is so close to the German border. Definitely more information to come on that. Terry, you know, there's been a lot of conversation about drones this week. Of course, we've seen EU leaders meeting. They've been talking about a so-called drone wall. What can the EU and NATO countries in particular do immediately to curb these incursions? Well, both organizations are definitely trying to stop these very dangerous incursions into EU and NATO airspace. As you mentioned, the European Union held a summit this week in Copenhagen. The European political community also talking about this. And they are going to try to allocate money to help nations who are in the first case responsible to purchase more drones, counter-drone technology that would be ground-based, also perhaps more fighter jets to keep watch from the air. And NATO, of course, has set up its new operation called Eastern Sentry, where they've got more assets allocated to watching the airspace and, you know, flying to intercept these missiles, sorry, these drones, as we saw in Poland earlier. I mean, everyone basically acknowledges that they were behind on this. And only Ukraine has the knowledge that's really needed to move fast. So that's why you saw a Ukrainian team, Sarah, also dispatched to Copenhagen to help protect that capital during these summits. I think that everyone is doing the best they can, but having to acknowledge that they should have had more in place already. Really interesting stuff.
