In response, the government announced a stimulus package exceeding $660 million, featuring fuel price cuts and cash handouts for adults. Critics argue the move contradicts Anwar's stated fiscal goals and question its timing ahead of a significant political challenge. They're angry at what they say is Anwar's failure to enact the reforms he promised when he was in opposition. When he was in opposition he was completely different to how he is in government. What he promised before and what he's delivering now is completely opposite. Underpinning a lot of the discontent is economic hardship as people in Malaysia, as elsewhere, deal with rising prices that wages struggle to keep pace with. It's difficult this year. It's not only difficult for me, but for other traders here. The cost of living has gone up, but what can we do? We can only work harder. It's a public unhappiness that's led to what appears to be an unexpected windfall from the government. In what his critics say is a deeply cynical move, Anwar announced this week a more than $660 million stimulus package that includes cuts to fuel prices and also a cash handout for every Malaysian adult, just three days before the biggest challenge yet to his leadership. That handout puts Anwar at odds with his stated goal of raising more revenue while cutting spending. That would detract from the people's already quite meagre income and therein lies the difficulties as double whammy for him and how he would navigate that, I think, would determine the rest of his tenure as prime minister.
