Experts emphasize the importance of preparing homes and gathering essential supplies before a hurricane approaches, as last-minute shopping can be chaotic and supplies may be limited. Recommended items include batteries, gas cans, tarps, sandbags, plywood, and especially water, which is often overlooked until it is unavailable.

Homeowners are also advised to secure or remove loose outdoor items and trim shrubbery to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles in high winds. After the storm, caution is urged before returning, as hazards like downed power lines and debris may remain. Checking with local authorities for updates is recommended before re-entering affected areas.

Prepping your home before the next big hurricane

Yeah, when a hurricane is on the horizon, last minute store runs can be chaotic and that's if supplies are even available. Experts say planning ahead makes all the difference. There's items that you should have that I call staple items that you should get prior to any storm or natural disaster, such as batteries, gas can tarp, sandbags and plywood. Another must have water. It's often overlooked until it's gone. You often forget about how much water you may need to consume. Let's say water is not operable in your area though. A couple of gallons of water may be suitable for you to have on hand prior to any event of that hurricane. Yard prep is also key. High winds can turn ordinary items into dangerous projectiles, loose debris items, such a trash cans that you may keep outside of your house. Any different type of shrubbery or need to be trimmed back. I think if you feel handy, you can get in some of these brushing debris removed and anything that you can move inside of your garage or a closed setting. And when the storm is over, don't rush back in power lines and debris can still pose a threat. It's good to kind of take a local check with so many municipalities to kind of see what is the landscape of what's going on before you just start stepping on a property for Accuweather.
