Almost 2,700 firefighters battled Tuesday to contain forest blazes across Portugal that have led to almost the whole country being put on high alert for fires. Seventeen major fires blazed with the most serious in the center and north of the country.

Portugal is contending with several large wildfires in its mountainous northern regions, including areas near the town of Arruca. Hundreds of firefighters have been mobilised to combat the fires, which are being intensified by high temperatures, strong winds, and challenging terrain. 

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, and some villages, such as Ponta da Barca, have been evacuated as flames approach homes. At least 2,000 hectares of forest have been burned, and the entire country remains on fire alert due to ongoing adverse weather conditions.

Portugal battles three large wildfires

Wildfires are raging out of control across Portugal's mountainous north, surrounding the town of Arruca. Residents, taken by surprise, race to avoid being caught up in the flames. And for the 600 firefighters mobilised to tackle the blazes, conditions are difficult. The temperatures are close to 40 degrees with strong winds and the steep, heavily wooded terrain is hard to access. Air support is essential. Local residents such as Ricardo Mendes are doing what they can. It's still burning, so I'm cleaning away debris to prevent the fire from spreading across the path below. I'm sure the same thing needs to be done on the other side. Due to several flare-ups, the authorities are urging people to stay indoors until further notice. The village is under lockdown. We're doing everything we can to protect the houses that aren't directly threatened. A hundred and fifty kilometres further north, the residents of the rural commune of Ponta da Barca have had to be evacuated, sometimes with their animals. Residents who have barely slept in the last three days stand by as the flames come dangerously close to their homes. At least 2,000 hectares of forest have already burned. Several fires remain active in the centre of the country as well. All of Portugal remains on fire alert due to the ongoing unfavourable weather conditions.
