In Lebanon, Pope Leo marked the anniversary of the Nicene Creed with prayers for Christian unity and visited the site of the 2020 Beirut port explosion. He emphasized the importance of rejecting revenge and violence in the Middle East and praised Lebanon's fragile coexistence of Christians and Muslims.

In Turkey, he warned that humanity is facing a piecemeal third world war, urging leaders to choose dialogue over domination. That goes for his own faith, too, as he marked the 1700th anniversary of the council that produced the Nicene Creed, praying with Orthodox patriarch Bartholomew for Christian unity. Crossing next into Lebanon, shattered by economic collapse and clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, Leo held up the country's fragile coexistence of Christians and Muslims as a model worth saving. And this morning he brought that message to the site of Beirut's infamous 2020 port explosion. It was here that entire neighborhoods were destroyed, the city left shattered and more than 200 people killed, yet it is here where Pope Leo will deliver a message of hope. And a warning. The Middle East needs new approaches in order to reject the mindset of revenge and violence, to overcome political, social and religious divisions. He's been greeted by outbursts of joy, now turning to fear over his departure when there will be little standing between Hezbollah, Israel and a return to violence.
