Pope Leo completed a three-day visit to Lebanon, culminating in a mass in Beirut attended by approximately 150,000 people. During the event, he called for new approaches in the Middle East to overcome divisions and promote reconciliation and peace. 

The Pope also visited the site of the 2020 Beirut port explosion, offering prayers for the victims. This visit, which also included a stop in Turkey, marked his first official trip abroad, and he expressed hopes to visit Algeria in the future.

A mass and a message of peace in the Lebanese capital, the highlight of the Pope's three-day visit to the country, attended by some 150,000 people. The Middle East needs new approaches in order to reject the mindset of revenge and violence, to overcome political, social and religious divisions, and to open new chapters in the name of reconciliation and peace. A message that went down well among locals and many who had travelled from abroad, including from neighbouring Syria, to join the event. With the country still reeling from the recent war between Hezbollah and Israel, and years of political and economic crises, many Lebanese are longing for better times. I'm so happy. As you can see, people are here from all over Lebanon, from villages, from different religions. It's something very beautiful and it feels peaceful. Before the Pope came, we were all sad about what's happening in Lebanon. But when he arrived, he gave us hope, and we felt things might get better. Thank you, Pope. The pontiff also went to pray at the site of the catastrophic explosion in Beirut's port that shook the country in 2020. Hundreds were killed when ammonium nitrate detonated in a warehouse. Five years on, with not a single official convicted. This remains an open wound for many. The visit to Lebanon is part of Pope Leo's first official trip abroad, that also took him to Turkey. On the flight back to Rome, he said he hopes to visit Algeria next, to see the places where St. Augustine lived. One of the most influential figures, both in Christianity and for Pope Leo.
