A 28-year-old man with a history of domestic violence is in custody and expected to be charged with two counts of murder after being transferred to Mount Isa.

The crash, which occurred on Doomadgee Road, also left a four-year-old in critical condition and injured two other children. Police reinforcements have arrived to maintain order, and the community has been effectively shut down to allow the Indigenous community to observe sorry business while the investigation continues.

Police reinforcements have now arrived from Mount Isa in part to protect the man that they allege deliberately caused those deaths yesterday. Several sources with knowledge of this investigation say the 28-year-old man spent the night in police custody in Doomerji. He has an extensive domestic violence history. Officers did expect to charge him today with two counts of murder, but 10 News now understands that will only happen once he's been taken to a larger police station in Mount Isa. This all relates to a car crash on Doomerji Road early yesterday morning. The man will be accused of pursuing another car, ramming it repeatedly until it went off the road, killing the 30-year-old woman driving and a 10-year-old girl. A four-year-old is still recovering in hospital. They are fighting for life. Another two children were also hurt. Police have confirmed they're treating this as a domestic violence incident. I would also ask that people remain calm. I'll ask that the wider community please be respectful and we will undertake the investigation. It will be comprehensive and it will be thorough. Chris, Doomerji has effectively been shut down to allow the Indigenous community there to mark sorry business.
