A senior police officer has been charged with assaulting former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas, who sustained a serious eye injury while being arrested at a protest in Sydney.

A senior police officer has been charged with assault following an incident outside SSE Plating in Balmore, Sydney, where former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas suffered a serious eye injury during a protest. Thomas was initially charged after the police and protesters clashed, but those charges were withdrawn, and she, along with four other protesters, was awarded over $40,000 in a cost hearing. Thomas has since filed a civil claim against the New South Wales Police. The police minister confirmed an ongoing investigation but declined further comment as the matter is before the courts. Calls have been made for Assistant Police Commissioner Brett McFadden to be stood down due to his comments after the protest. The charged officer is scheduled to appear in Bankstown Local Court.

Cries for help that over four months later would see a senior police officer charged with assault. This is a very welcomed and a very just step in the process of holding the police to account for what happened that dreadful morning. A morning so dreadful it landed former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas in hospital with a serious eye injury which may have permanently blinded her. She was initially charged over the incident that saw police clash with 60 protesters outside SSE Plating in Balmore in June. Those charges were withdrawn two weeks ago with Thomas and four fellow protesters awarded more than $40,000 at a cost hearing on Friday. Thomas has also since lodged a civil claim against the New South Wales police. No person in New South Wales should go through what Hannah Thomas has been through. The police minister today in a statement said police are investigating this incident like they said they would but she wouldn't comment further as the senior constable is now before the courts. Greens MP Sue Higginson wants Assistant Police Commissioner Brett McFadden to be stood down because of these comments he made in the days following the protest. I'm not aware of any misconduct by any police officers. The unaccountability and the attempts to avoid accountability here are so glaring for everyone to see.
