Mystery surrounds the motivation behind a rather bizarre act of vandalism on the Anzac memorial in Hyde Park. Two men were caught on camera splashing an oily substance onto the heritage stone causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Two men were recorded on CCTV vandalising the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park, Sydney, by splashing a substance believed to be oil-based on the heritage stone. The incident resulted in approximately $20,000 worth of damage, with around 20 stains left on the memorial. 

Police have collected forensic evidence, including fingerprints and DNA samples, and are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the suspects. Despite being aware of the presence of high-definition security cameras, the men did not attempt to conceal their identities. Authorities have emphasised the significance of the memorial and are committed to holding those responsible accountable.

Rolling up to one of the outer walls of the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park, this man splashes something on the stone before going inside. Then this bald guy in dark blue heads up the stairs with a bottle of something in hand and does the same. They cross paths inside but don't speak until they leave, leaving behind about 20 of these stains on the heritage stone. Obviously they just don't even know about the First and Second World War and things like that. It's awful. It doesn't even make much of an impression as far as making a statement. Their spree was caught on camera just after midday yesterday with up to $20,000 of damage. Police brought in forensics today to dust for fingerprints and swab for DNA. But if they can't identify the suspects, detectives are hopeful the public can. The War Memorial is a sacred site for our community and to do this, it's absolutely disgusting. Samples from the clear substance have been taken away for testing but it's believed to be oil-based. Police say the two men took their time. They were here for about 20 minutes. CCTV cameras even captured them speaking with a member of the security team. There are multiple high-definition cameras covering all angles of the memorial, a fact they seem to know but didn't hide their faces. We are absolutely desperate to identify these two individuals and make sure they're held accountable for their actions. Paris Martin, 10 News.
