Lind Alcena couldn't stop crying when we met her. She was on her way back to her house a day after Typhoon Kalmegi tore through the central Philippines. But she'd already seen their village, or whatever's left of it, from an area above, and knew she was returning to nothing but rubble. I told my neighbors I'm pretty sure our houses have been washed out. True enough, when I saw them from the bridge, they were gone. Despite losing their properties, Lind and her neighbors are grateful they're alive. Rain caused the river next to their village to overflow in a flash flood. Some people in a nearby community didn't. More than 300,000 people in the Philippines fled to safety ahead of Typhoon Kalmegi's landfall. But many people here and in other similar neighborhoods in Cebu stayed put, thinking they'd be safe because their homes were two stories tall. They couldn't be more wrong. Mary-Jane Famador says she's never experienced anything like it, even when super typhoons have come and gone. It was only a matter of seconds the water level rose so fast, and roofs did come off during Super Typhoon Yolanda, but that was it, so we thought it'd be similar. The flood swept away cars, submerged homes, and rescue workers have been pulling out bodies and looking for scores of people who are missing. The mayor of Talisay City says more help is needed. Right now the main priority is to clear the roads and maybe some back coast to clear muddy streets. Even some of those helping, however, have become casualties of the typhoon. Six Philippine Air Force servicemen died in a crash while on a relief mission on Tuesday.
