This is the Chacaluta border complex, straddling the desert frontier between Peru and Chile. Peru declared a state of emergency here. The border was closed and the military deployed in expectation of an influx of undocumented migrants. The government's policy is that we will not allow irregular migration. We do not have the conditions nor the capacity to receive more migrants. The announcement came after large numbers of migrants in Chile, mostly Venezuelans, attempted to leave the country and cross into Peru. They fear a crackdown on illegal immigrants if, as polls predict, far-right conservative candidate Jose Antonio Cast wins next month's presidential elections. To irregular migrants in Chile, I say that you have 103 days to leave our country voluntarily. If you don't leave voluntarily, you will have to leave after I assume the presidency and you'll leave with what you're wearing. And now they're stranded here, at the border, unable to move forward and unwilling to go back. Since we're undocumented, we started thinking about how to avoid a bad situation. I told my partner that we're going to try to leave. We want to return to our country, that's our intention, but Peru won't let us pass to continue our journey. The limbo situation is concerning local authorities. At night or in the early morning, the temperature drops and during the day it rises again, which we find a little worrying because this could be the tip of the iceberg of a possible crisis. Not only a migration crisis, but also a humanitarian crisis. Officials from both sides of the border are scheduled to hold talks on migration next week. While those trapped in between, for now at least, can only wait.
