However, authorities are concerned as a protest group, Australia Unites Against Government Corruption, has applied for a permit to march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which could lead to another closure shortly after the route opens.

The Premier has expressed opposition to such protests due to the significant disruption they cause, echoing concerns raised during previous rallies. The issue of prohibited flags and terror symbols at protests has also resurfaced, with police noting difficulties in enforcing current legislation due to minor alterations of banned symbols. Efforts to tighten these laws have previously been blocked in parliament.

Permit sought for protest march on Sydney Harbour Bridge

But that is something that we also have to ensure that we're not encroaching on the right to protest. After the Supreme Court authorised last month's pro-Palestine protest, an umbrella group called Australia Unites Against Government Corruption has also applied for a permit. Since our report last night, their advertising has updated to say it will march across the bridge, despite no decision on their application. The Premier is personally opposed to it, as he was the pro-Palestine protest. This is exactly what I was worried about, that people would put in applications to march on the Harbour Bridge. Protests on the Harbour Bridge are massively disruptive. They split the city in two. The recent run of rallies has also put the issue of prohibited flags and terror symbols back in the spotlight, with multiple reports of sightings. Senior police telling State Parliament their hands are essentially tied. Some of the flags, and we see this all the time, are just slightly changed, and when they are changed even slightly, they no longer fulfil the prohibited symbol legislation. People shouldn't be able to evade the law by loopholes like this. A gap the Coalition did try to close. Unfortunately, Chris Min's Labor Party voted against it. Lachlan Kennedy, 10 News.
