Authorities, supported by NGOs and the private sector, are distributing supplies and medical assistance, but the scale of the disaster is straining resources. Health officials report rising cases of gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis, and respiratory infections, while the United Nations warns that Pakistan’s fragile healthcare system is under significant pressure as the crisis continues.

The flood continues to ravage territory after territory, inching ever closer to Multan, a city of almost 3 million people. Over half a million people from the outskirts have been evacuated. Many displaced families have been forced into camps such as these, living in unhygienic conditions and exposed to infectious diseases. But the government is hopeful they can overcome the looming threat. The government cannot address this crisis alone. Support from the media, private sector, NGOs and citizens is vital. Together, through unity, we will overcome this challenge. While we're ensuring the supply of essentials and medical facilities across Punjab, people must be cautious and try to protect themselves by avoiding contaminated waters that pose serious health risks. While the elders have seen such displacement in the past, it's particularly hard for the children. They're under severe risk due to lack of milk and other essentials, and are at increased risk of water-borne diseases. With large swathes of land underwater, the risk of outbreak of diseases such as cholera or hepatitis remains a major concern, and the UN says children are the most vulnerable. The scorching heat and high humidity also increases the threat of dehydration. Although paramedics and doctors are at hand to provide basic treatment, the disaster is too big to handle the crisis. Most patients are suffering from gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis and respiratory infections. The government has ensured the supply of necessary medicines, and we are effectively managing the situation. It's a race against time, as rescue teams move more and more people from the flooded areas. Floodwaters continue to inundate village after village, including farmlands. The floodwaters have taken everything from us. We are left at the mercy of God, seeking refuge in this camp, which itself is full of challenges. The authorities here do not seem serious about our suffering. There is an imminent threat of further deluge, as India releases more water into the already swollen rivers. The United Nations says the humanitarian toll of this year's flood is widespread, as Pakistan's fragile health care system grapples to deal with the crisis.
