The disaster has caused hundreds of fatalities and affected 1.2 million people, with 1,400 villages impacted, including the loss of homes and livestock. 

Authorities have established nearly 700 relief camps and over 260 medical stations to assist evacuees and prevent disease outbreaks. Heavy monsoon rains are the primary cause, though Pakistani officials have also accused India of worsening the situation by releasing excess water from dams. Pakistan continues to face significant challenges from climate-related disasters, having experienced major floods and extreme temperatures in recent years.

From a helicopter, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif took stock of the damage, swathes of the agricultural Punjab region underwater. Families waded through the filthy floodwater and were piled onto boats, scrambling to leave. A quarter of a million residents have been evacuated to safety from floods that have already killed hundreds. But after three nearby rivers burst their banks simultaneously, response teams are struggling. This is the first time there has been so much flooding since 1988. Rescue teams are working, but they do not have enough resources to evacuate people on such a large scale. Regional authorities say the floods are affecting 1.2 million people and that 1,400 villages have been hit, including their animals and livelihoods. As you can see, the river water has overflowed, causing immense loss to the people. Livestock has been swept away and homes have been destroyed. I urge everyone in the district who has the means to come forward and help those affected. Let's support those who have lost their animals and homes. Nearly 700 relief camps have been set up to support evacuees as well as 265 medical stations as authorities try to get ahead of possible disease outbreaks. Heavy monsoon rains have pounded Pakistan in recent weeks, while the country's federal planning minister accused India of intentionally releasing excess water from dams into Pakistani borderlands, exacerbating the floods. Pakistan is a climate-vulnerable country disproportionately paying the price for climate change, exposed to monsoon rains, glacier melt and high temperatures. In 2022, floods put more than a quarter of the country underwater and killed 1,700 Pakistanis. And earlier this year, the country recorded temperatures over 50 degrees Celsius.

It's been 13 days since President Trump said he could strike a peace deal in Ukraine, following his meeting with Russia's leader, Vladimir Putin. But Russia shows no signs of backing down, launching an aerial assault on Kyiv.
