Before the smoke even settled, Pakistan's foreign ministry announced a temporary 48-hour ceasefire had been agreed with Afghanistan's Taliban leaders. The blast marked an escalation in cross-border fighting that began on Saturday. Afghan forces launched an attack on Pakistani soldiers, calling the operation retaliation for violations of their territory and airspace. Both sides claimed to have killed dozens of each other's soldiers in the recent fighting. An uneasy pause was broken again before dawn on Witness Day. Pakistan says dozens of civilians were killed when Pakistani forces launched attacks in a spin-balled-up district. Early in the morning, firing started from both sides. In our village, shells and bullets started hitting people's houses. A young boy from our village was wounded. Our request is for our government of Pakistan and the Taliban's fighters to immediately stop this war because Pashtun people live on both sides of the border. Many people have fled our village since morning. It's the worst violence between the neighbours since the Afghan Taliban ceased power four years ago. Islamabad accuses Afghanistan of harbouring armed groups that have called out attacks in Pakistan, a charge the Taliban government denies. Fighting has foiled the closure of their 2,600-kilometre border, stranding people on both sides and waiting for a resolution. Pakistan's foreign ministry says sincere efforts should be made to resolve a complex but solvable problem. There is cautious optimism about the temporary ceasefire.
