Douglas Pancop, a Pacers season-ticket holder, discovered his StubHub account had been compromised after he was unable to access it and noticed $1,100 from a recent ticket sale was missing. The funds were rerouted to a PayPal account controlled by scammers, who also attempted to make additional high-value purchases using his account.

Pancop quickly contacted his bank to prevent further losses and has since struggled to get a response from StubHub. The Better Business Bureau advises victims to report such incidents to relevant authorities and recommends using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication to protect online accounts.

I literally was about to faint my living room. That's how Douglas Pancop felt when he couldn't get into his StubHub account. I went to take some tickets down that I had sold potentially. When he went to change his password, the emails weren't coming to him. I was able to click an old email listing where I had listed some tickets for the Thunder Game. At that time I clicked the link view listing and it allowed me inside my profile and that's when I noticed someone had compromised my profile, changed my email, my phone number. And $1,100 from a recent ticket sale was no longer in his account. And that amount was then routed to a generic email address to a PayPal account and I'm definitely not Jack Smith, my name's Douglas. On top of that, the scammers tried to buy World Series tickets, Bears tickets and seized to several other NFL games. He was also potentially on the hook for more money as well. There was pending orders for Hawks and Warriors and anybody that knows about StubHub, when I don't send them to the buyer in this instance, StubHub reserves the right. Their policy is that they can charge me up to four times the amount. Douglas says luckily he contacted his bank immediately to shut down the card on file. My procedures of keeping a limited amount of my personal accounts all saved me from this. I have heard reports related to this type of scam. Jennifer Adamany with the BBB says the first thing to do when this happens is contact the ticket platform. Report it to the ticket platform, certainly report it with the Better Business Bureau, Attorney General's office, anywhere you can to get the word out because knowledge is power. And to make sure your accounts are safe, use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication. You can also check to see if your email has been compromised on a website called Have I Been Owned. Take that into consideration and go and change your passwords. Douglas says he's contacted StubHub by phone several times and in the last week and a half, no one has answered his calls. It makes me feel real frustrated knowing that I'm not like anybody who just speculates and puts tickets online. I own my tickets, so I work really hard. Jessica Grundling, Scripps News Group.
